The Center for Khmer Studies (CKS) is based in Siem Reap, with a branch office in Phnom Penh. CKS promotes research and scholarly exchange between American, international, and Cambodian scholars in the social sciences, arts, and humanities.

CKS is seeking a skilled Instructor to design and teach a research course in social science and humanities research skills for our Ponlok Chomnes Research Fellowship Program (PCRF).

The PCRF Program aims to develop analytical and research skills among master’s students and recent master’s graduates for doctoral or professional careers. The Instructor will guide fellows in topic development, analysis, critical thinking, research methods, proposal writing, publication, and presentations. In addition, the Instructor will develop a curriculum that addresses topics such as climate change, local histories, gender, religion, and those relevant to student and instructor interests.

Scope of Work

The PCRF Program Instructor will fulfill teaching duties for the PCRF Program for 3 months on-site at CKS’s office in Phnom Penh tentatively scheduled between September and December 2024. Additionally, the Instructor will help coordinate three Ponlok Chomnes CKS Research Capacity Building Workshops running concurrently over the period.

The Instructor will design a course curriculum for social science and humanities research capacity building in collaboration with CKS, teach the class over the term, evaluate students’ work, and report regularly to CKS. The work to be undertaken will be based on these specifications:

Duration of the Work 

The instructor will begin designing and preparing for the course, and start student recruitment in cooperation with CKS, in July 2024. The program will run between September and December 2024 (exact dates to be determined). The Instructor is expected to be in Phnom Penh the day before the official commencement of the program, which will begin in September 2024. A detailed work plan with specific milestones and deliverable deadlines will be agreed upon at the outset of the agreement. 

Compensation: This fixed-term position offers a total compensation of USD 5,000 (including tax). Please note that no additional funds will be provided for housing or travel expenses outside of direct program activities, such as class field trips.

Duty Station: CKS Office, Phnom Penh 

Duties
  • Pre-Project Phase
  • To design and coordinate the academic curriculum for a 15-week program named Ponlok Chomnes Research Fellowship Program aiming to build research capacity for social sciences, arts, and humanities graduate students. 
  • To incorporate the findings and recommendations from the Research Capacity Building Assessment into the curriculum design 
  • To consider the applicable GEDSI principles in the curriculum design 
  • Project Implementation Phase 
  • To convene weekly research classes (Saturday from 05:30 PM until 08:30 PM) in social sciences, arts, and humanities in this 15-week program
  • To oversee the PCRF program implementation and work closely with the CKS Program Manager and CKS team.
  • To help facilitate the research capacity-building workshops 
  • To support graduate students in writing research papers/journal articles
  • To organize field trips and site visits with the support of the CKS team to supplement the course within the program. A planned site visit must be submitted to CKS at least 2 weeks before the commencement of the course.
  • To map out and invite guest speakers on relevant topics in the syllabus for the program.
  • Post PCRF Program Phase 
  • Conduct course evaluations 
  • Deliver a project report on the challenges, opportunities, lessons learned, and best practices
  • Roles and Responsibilities
  • The Instructor will work under the CKS-PC Phase II Program, report to CKS’s Deputy Director, and work closely with the Program Manager in the CKS Phnom Penh Office. 
  • The Instructor is responsible for providing their expertise to produce the expected outputs.
  • The Instructor shall report on and submit the above deliverables under this assignment to the assigned person, acting as the focal point for the project. 
  • The Instructor must maintain weekly communication with the Program Manager.
Requirements
  • Qualification
  •  PhD or PhD Candidate in Social Science, Arts, or Humanities 
  • Professional Experience 
  • College-level teaching experience in the field of social sciences, humanities, or arts 
  • Familiarity with international higher education practices and resources
  • Proven experience designing higher education curricula in social sciences, humanities, or the arts. 
  • Strong analytical skills and proficiency in quantitative and qualitative research
  • Academic publishing experience with peer-reviewed journal articles and research papers
