GIZ is a federally owned enterprise and is supporting the German Government in achieving its objectives in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development.

The FABRIC project supports the Asian textile industry in its transformation towards fair production for people and the environment. It identifies the common interests of key actors – in the factories, ministries, civil society and international brand manufacturers – and brings them together with the aim of developing a shared vision of sustainability and promoting greater cooperation. Such an approach can pave the way for qualitative growth alongside price competition. In cooperation with the Initiative Global Solidarity it works with industry stakeholders towards adopting a joint position on sustainable production criteria and global partnerships, provides advisory on sustainability standards and risk mitigation and grievance mechanisms. The project operates globally, as well as particular in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Myanmar, Pakistan and Viet Nam and also works with China.

Senior Private Sector Development Specialist for Sustainability in the Textile and Garment Sector

This position is for our project Promotion of Sustainability in the Textile and Garment Sector in Asia (FABRIC) in Cambodia, based in Phnom Penh.

The holder of the Senior Private Sector Development Specialist for Sustainability in the Textile and Garment Sector position is expected to lead partnerships with the private sector, Government and other stakeholders to promote the sustainable development of the sector.

Duties
  • Lead and implement project activities to improve the sustainability performance of the textile and garment sector with a special focus on social compliance, gender equality, labour standards and human rights topics
  • Provide technical advisory and management support to improve social standards, gender equality and workers` rights in close coordination with relevant actors, especially unions and NGOs etc.
  • Coordinate and strengthen relationships with senior actors of the private sector as well as partner organisations from government, academia, service provider with regards to activities and policies promoting a sustainable garment sector
  • Procurement and management of external consultancies to support capacity development measures and events
  • Contribute to the monitoring and evaluation of the project activities
  • Responsible for developing project action plans and to synchronise the planning and budgeting system
  • Ensure knowledge management: collect, processes and distributes information, monitors communication and interaction between government institutions, NGOs and society through analyses of the media, direct dialogue, participation
  • Support regional activities in close collaboration with the other partner countries
Requirements
  • University degree in Business Administration, Social Work, Economics, Social Science or other relevant disciplines.
  • At least 10 years of professional work experience in related positions of increasing responsibility;
  • At least 4 years experiences working with NGOs and/or development cooperation and/or with the private sector; experience in the garment sector and a relevant network would be considered a distinct advantage
  • Profound knowledge of relevant topics and international discussions in the field of descent work, labour and workers` rights, gender equality, occupational, health and safety, preferably in the garment sector
  • Understanding of relevant capacity development issues
  • Experience in project management and coordination
  • Excellent communication skills and negotiation experience in complex situations with senior stakeholders from development sector, NGOs, private sector and government, enabling collaboration to achieve joint objectives
  • Good general understanding of relevant topics in Cambodia with regard to social sustainability standards
  • Proven ability to work in a team, also in intercultural contexts
  • Good moderation and facilitation skills;
  • Excellent verbal and written English language skills; knowledge of Chinese would be a distinct advantage
