Translator
The position is for Khmer Language
CIS seeks an experienced candidate for the position of translator. The successful candidate will aid communication at CIS by translating materials in English into Khmer to high standard. They will help our marketing and communications team to maximize our website and social medical channels to reach families who may wish to enrol their children. They will ensure current CIS families remain informed and connected through newsletters, event materials and academic announcements.
This position would be suitable for a quick learner with excellent critical thinking skills who is keen to join a motivated, forward-thinking team. They must be able to manage detail-oriented translation whilst keeping the bigger picture concepts of brand voice and tone, educational theory and school values in mind. The successful candidate will need to collaborate with multiple teams and build an in-depth, specialist understanding of all aspects of CIS. As the school’s main translator, they must be able to handle a large volume of varied content. They may be asked to provide occasional interpretation assistance.
- Translate social media posts, newsletters, forms, advertising materials, graphics, website content, important email updates to staff and parents, memos, policy and procedural documents, and letters, etc. into Khmer according to CIS editorial style and expected standards
- Occasionally translate official documents and other materials in Khmer into English for internal reference as needed
- Schedule jobs in priority order in the translation and vetting pipeline; communicate content delivery times and liaise with staff to discuss any unclear points
- Occasionally provide interpretation for staff and parents on request
- Collaboratively develop an Khmer-language editorial style guide; update the editorial style guide over time, integrating new terms and writing samples
- Child Safeguarding: CIS is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. The successful candidate will be required to:
- fulfill their role in promoting and safeguarding the welfare of all students in the school
- attend regular professional development child protection and safeguarding programs and sign a Code of Conduct
- report to the Designated or Deputy Safeguarding Lead any concerns they have for the welfare of a student
- Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Khmer language and literature, or translation; additional relevant professional development courses a strong advantage
- At least four years of experience in content translation, ideally for international schools, law firms, local and international NGOs, UN agencies, private sector organizations or governmental institutions
- Experience translating a variety of content from marketing materials to policy documents
- Experience providing interpretation assistance an advantage but not essential
- Experience studying abroad or working in an international organization, especially in a marketing context, a strong advantage
- Knowledge, Competencies and Attributes
- Native Khmer speaker with excellent reading and writing skills and excellent command of Khmer spelling and grammar
- Highly proficient in written and spoken business English
- Comfortable working independently and under pressure
- Good ICT skills; working knowledge of the Google Workspace, namely Google Docs and Forms
- Good understanding of localization; able to take into account (and, when needed, carefully explain to colleagues) how Cambodian social and cultural norms are to be respected and reflected in the translation and interpretation process
- Subject matter expertise in concepts of progressive education, the international school environment and/or public policy a very strong advantage
- Brings seamless attention to detail, integrity and a commitment to accuracy and professionalism
- Confident asking for clarification or assistance when needed; willing to do research, consider options and problem-solve independently
- Strong interpersonal skills; able to build and maintain relationships with multiple stakeholders
- Highly organized and able to follow systems and schedules
- Interested in research, learning new things and building new skills; brings growth mindset
- Willingness to build and maintain an accurate, complete, specialist understanding of educational concepts to aid in producing meaningful and accurate translations
- Willingness to take part in professional development sessions related to Alberta Education and IBDP curricula, inquiry-based learning, play-based learning, the Reggio Emilia approach, and translation and interpretation best practices
- Comfortable with CIS’s vision and values; able and willing to work with the concepts of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging
- Demonstrates cultural competence and enjoys learning about new cultures
