Want to make a positive difference to the future of people and our one shared home, the Earth? Working at WWF could be your opportunity of a lifetime.
All around the world, people are waking up to the deepening crisis of nature loss. A growing realization that nature is our life-support system. And that nobody will be spared from the impacts of its loss. Here at WWF, we are helping to tackle this enormous global challenge.
What we do
WWF is working on the ground across the Asia-Pacific region to conserve biodiversity and build a secure and sustainable future for people and wildlife.
In response to the rising threats to river dolphins globally and in recognition of the loss to their populations over the last 20 years, a Global River Dolphin Strategy, endorsed by IUCN, was launched in 2019. Since WWF was one of the key partners in designing that strategy, we have now developed a specific initiative to ensure the WWF teams working on river dolphins in 12 countries across Asia and LAC are focused on delivering that global strategy.
Our initiative focuses on a holistic approach to river dolphin conservation, which requires us to engage not only with site-based protection and management interventions, but also engage with basin-scale planning to ensure river dolphin rivers remain free flowing, engage business to improve water quality and engage in national fishery policy. Most notably this role was responsible for securing a global declaration to protect and restore river dolphin populations in October 2023, the first of its kind for river dolphins and agreed by the governments of 12 of the 14 river dolphin range states. This now provides the opportunity to upscale international and national policy, capacity building and budget to prioritise river dolphin restoration in those countries so they are on track to take full responsibility for the recovery and protection of their river dolphin populations from 2030.
