Permanent Lead Interpreter-Translator
Working schedule
25 hours/ week from September through December 2023; 35 hours/ week from January through September 2024. Five-day week.
Salary level:
$400/ mo. September-December 2023 (training). $500 / mo. January 2024 and ongoing. This is a permanent position, with annual leave, bonus benefits, and salary increases for up to three years.

- From September 2023 through December 2023, candidate will be in training regarding medical terminology and medical interpretation, practicing hands-on occasionally at Khmer Soviet Friendship Hospital. During this time, candidate will also assist the General Manager and the University course coordinator to carry out administrative tasks. This will increase the candidate’s understanding of the overall functioning of the organization. In addition, candidate will work with the lead speech pathologist lecturer for the university course for a better understanding of course participants’ needs, and to assist/ interpret during three or four university practicum workshops. Candidate will also translate various documents while in training.
- January 2024 through September 2024: This will be a predominantly face to face interpreting role within busy hospital settings. You will be exposed to unwell patients and busy ward environments. The role involves accompanying SSTC international dysphagia clinical supervisors to hospitals in order to interpret between Khmer hospital staff, patients and families, and international dysphagia clinical supervisors. Khmer hospital staff will be trainees in a new University of Puthisastra certificate program. International clinical supervisors provide education, supervision and mentorship to Khmer hospital staff who are treating patients with swallowing problems.
- Tasks will also include translation of written documents (e.g. letters, teaching materials) from English to Khmer and Khmer to English; translation of our written communication with Khmer staff (e.g. on Facebook or WhatsApp or Telegram) and interpretation during presentations, meetings and workshops. The role involves travel between hospital sites / the university/ the office.
- Skills: Excellent spoken English. Knowledge of medical terminology is a plus. Good written English. Native Khmer speaker / reader / writer. Experience of professional work as an interpreter/translator preferable. Familiarity with the use of WhatsApp, Facebook and Telegram is required. University students or graduated students with excellent English and previous exposure to healthcare settings work may apply.
Adjunct Interpreter-Translator
Locations – SSTC Office, Phnom Penh, and partner hospitals - Calmette Hospital, Khmer Soviet Friendship Hospital, Sunrise Japan Hospital, Vissar Clinic, and Jeramiah’s Hope Clinic, and the University of Puthisastra in Phnom Penh.
Working schedule:
35 hours/ week, 5-day week, December 2023 through September 2024
Stipend level:
This is a grant-funded position, paid through stipend by Rotary Club of Phnom Penh.
$400/ mo. December 2023 (training), $550-$600 / mo. January-September 2024.
Although this is a temporary position, it is renewable for January-September 2025, and for January-September 2026 (depending on performance review).
