The Asia Foundation is a nonprofit international development organization committed to improving lives and expanding opportunities across Asia and the Pacific. Informed by decades of experience and deep local expertise, our work across the region is focused on good governance, women’s empowerment and gender equality, inclusive economic growth, environment and climate action, and regional and international relations.

The Asia Foundation is implementing the Ponlok Chomnes II: Data and Dialogue for Development in Cambodia Program between July 2023 and June 2027 with support from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The goal of Ponlok Chomnes II is that public policy decisions, based on evidence and informed by inclusive dialogue, are operationalised and become the norm in Cambodia.

The Asia Foundation Cambodia is seeking an intern to assist the Ponlok Chomnes Program Team in implementing an online communication strategy, managing and distributing content on the program’s online communication channels, and designing and producing communication materials (such as promotional videos, digital posters, flyer, booklet, infographic, among others).

INTERNSHIP DURATION: 6 months.

Internship Objectives

The chosen communication intern will be responsible for providing support to the Let’s Read Program. Specifically, they will play a crucial role in managing the public image of Let’s Read in Cambodia. This will involve designing, creating, and modifying social media content, maintaining the digital library, and contributing to the overall communications strategy of Let’s Read.

  • Intern will get a $300 monthly stipend for working full-time
  • $5 Monthly Pre-paid telephone card (Voucher)-call or internet data;
  • Holidays: align with the Office’s Public holidays;

Commitment and Working Hours

This is a 6-month internship. You will be expected to work five days per week full time.

Travel

The Internship will be based in the Phnom Penh office with the subject of travel and accommodation will be required if needed. All travel costs associated with program assignment will be paid by The Asia Foundation for any travel to provinces for programming purposes.

Duties
  • The selected Communication Intern will work to support Let’s Read Program below:
  • Communication, Digital, and Social Media
  • Maintain social media and create content complying with Let’s Read’s strategy for parents and children across all Let’s Read channels.
  • Be creative and lead social media design by complying with Let’s Read’s guide.
  • Support in-house video production for the 2023 reading activity and other outreach events with partners.
  • Maintain a digital library and make it lively and friendly for users.
  • Participate in Let’s Read overall communication strategy.
  • Be inspired to propose creative ideas for Let’s Read audience engagement.
  • Program for Reading Promotion
  • Work together with the program team to create engaging reading booth activities at the National Book Fairs and the National Reading Day, etc.
  • This internship offers the candidate a chance to work closely with The Asia Foundation on the Let’s Read digital library, Let’s Read Facebook page and Telegram in the following ways: 
  • Digital Library
  • Use your creativity to help expand the reach of the Let’s Read digital library and make reading more accessible to thousands of children and their parents;
  • Create banners using characters and images from storybooks in the Let’s Read library and post them to the site;
  • Create and promote thematic book collections;
  • Assist with translation of documents from English to Khmer or vice versa.
  • Social Media (Canva)
  • Design and modify graphic posts (still/GIF/video) for the Let’s Read Facebook page using Canva;
  • Translate text from English to Khmer, write original copy for post captions, reply to comments and messages;
  • Track post-performance to gauge the effectiveness of specific images, posting timing, etc.,
  • Put together reports and recommendations for future posting strategies based on your analysis and experience;
  • Contribute to design decisions and general strategy discussions.
  • Make use of and monitor Telegram groups for specific projects and activities for promoting reading with parents and partners.

  • Use a camera to help document live book creation events (still shots and/or video);
  • Use a camera to help document other Let’s Read-related events, such as teacher training.

  • Experience working in a professional working environment while learning about program structure, internal and external communications, project development, working collaboratively, etc;
  • Opportunity to build your professional network with donors, partner NGOs, and inspiring individuals, particularly in the education space;

  • Required Qualifications
  • The internship should meet the following criteria:
  • Be a fresh graduate or graduate from university-related disciplines such as media, communication, and relevant studies;
  • Have an interest in working with NGOs and communication and social media;
  • Have good interpersonal skills;
  • Demonstrate the willingness to learn new things and new challenges, especially bringing digital use to the program;
  • Have a background in Communication and Media in Arts;
  • Computer literate in graphic design and able to use Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoints, etc.…
  • Have the ability to use a camera;
  • Able to work on a variety of tasks simultaneously and collaborate with various people in a multicultural team;
  • Proficient in both English and Khmer (spoken and written).
