The Center for Khmer Studies (CKS) is an independent and not- for- profit research center. Our mission is to support research and teaching in the social sciences, arts and humanities as they relate to Cambodia. Since its founding in 1998, CKS has aimed to foster understanding of Cambodia and the Mekong region.
Research project context
Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and TAF are collaborating to strengthen the capacity of Cambodian knowledge sector institutions to undertake quality research that informs public policy analysis and dialogue in Cambodia. To this end, DFAT and TAF created Ponlok Chomnes (Khmer for ‘seed of knowledge’ or ‘sprouting knowledge’), an innovative program of Australia’s Partnerships for Recovery Strategy in Cambodia. The aim is to help increase health security and also support socioeconomic stability and inclusion in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Center for Khmer Studies (CKS) in collaboration with the Sydney Southeast Asia Centre (SSEAC)-University of Sydney have received a grant from Ponlok Chomnes to develop a research program to this end.The program, “Resilience and Recovery among Workers in Cambodia’s Hotel Sector”, focuses on workers at hotels and guest houses in Siem Reap, and aims to uncover the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on Cambodian people who work in these industries and how they have managed to cope through this devastating historical moment that has had often dire consequences on their livelihoods, physical and mental health, relationships. How is resilience expressed among these workers and what factors enhance the ability to be resilient? To address these questions the study is using a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze the impacts COVID-19 pandemic on workers who are employed by (a) large, foreign and locally owned hotels and (b) small, locally owned guesthouses.
